I’ve been doing sponsored challenges for around seven years now. It all started when I heard that a friend of mine from school had been diagnosed with cancer. I just couldn’t believe it! How could a healthy twenty-six year old suddenly face death? I guess Liam wasn’t just a school friend. Although he was a year older than me, he was my best friend for the six years we studied together, and I felt that I should do something to help him. One evening I was sitting with my sister and her husband, and we were talking about Liam. Suddenly, my brother-in-law looked at me and said, “Why don’t we raise some money for him?” We spent the next two hours discussing what we could do and that’s when we came up with the idea of doing the “Escape from Alcatraz” triathlon (swimming, cycling, and running) in San Francisco, California. Of course, there were some major obstacles to this, the first being that I wasn’t in great shape. But after six weeks training in the gym, I was ready for what would be the toughest challenge of my life. We started by swimming 2.4 km in the icy cold San Francisco Bay waters from Alcatraz Island to shore. Then we cycled for nearly 29 km before finally running in the hills around San Francisco Bay. We managed to raise more than $50,000, so we were really pleased. When we got back home we began to plan our next challenge, cycling across Australia. Since then, we’ve done five challenges together and raised almost $1 million.
